It’s during that time that “Yankee Doodle” as we know it came to be. Starting from the tail, South Carolina, Virginia, Maryland, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, New York and at the head, New England.īy the 1770’s the Colonies and Great Britain were in the midst of debate that was growing increasingly violent and would lead to our permanent separation. It presents an American rattlesnake, chopped into pieces that are labeled as colonies from South to North. Take a look at Benjamin Franklin’s notorious “Join or Die” cartoon. They sought and found refuge in what was then New Netherland (New York). The Hutchinson River Parkway that runs North of NYC is named for Anne Hutchinson and her group who fled the New England brand of Puritanism in 1642. New York often became a place of refuge for people fleeing the intolerance of New England. It was seen as an intolerant place, filled with Puritans, backwards and possessing little in common with their neighbors. New England was viewed by the other colonies as a separate region. It wasn’t unusual at that time to find insulting comments in NYC about our neighbors in Connecticut, with Royal Governor Cadwallader Colden calling Yale the “ nursery of sedition, factionalism and rebellion” and the residents of the colony the usual “ dregs and troublemakers“. The geographic boundary ended at the Connecticut border. A New Yorker definitely was not a Yankee. At that time in our colonial history New England was its own geographic, cultural and religious entity. To start, we have to understand what the term “Yankee” meant at the time the song was created, the 1700’s: a resident of New England. We all remember “Yankee Doodle” as a children’s song or a fife and drum song heard at parades, but what does it mean? Where did it come from and what the heck does macaroni have to do with it? I always wondered about it so, here’s the story of “Yankee Doodle”.
